Can
allergy sufferers find relief with hypoallergenic dogs?
Look
at yourself - your eyes are itching and swollen, your
nose is running, you're miserable. Is it the pet dander,
the long coat of dog hair, what is it? Well the jury's
out on this one. It seems everyone has an opinion on
which breeds are hypoallergenic but then conflicting
information says that hypoallergenic
dogs are a myth.
Well,
how about searching for a middle ground here. I'd certainly
like to get a recommendation from an allergy sufferer
who claims to have found a hypoallergenic dog, wouldn't
you?
Here's
a list of numerous hypoallergenic dogs:
-
Portuguese Water Dogs
- Poodles
- Chihauhaus
- Bichon
Frise
- Irish
Terrier
- Komondor
- Mexican
Hairless (hairless)
- Chinese
Crested Dog (hairless)
- Giant
and Standard Schnauzer
- American
Hairless Terrier (hairless)
- Peruvian
Inca Orchid (hairless)
While
this is just a short list of hypoallergenic dogs at
least it gives you a place to start. As for some interesting
tidbits and facts:
- Bigger
dogs produce more dander.
- Bathing
dogs reduces allergens in their skin.
- Some
higher dander dog breeds: Cocker Spaniels, Irish Setters,
Afghan Hounds, Basset hounds, German Shepherds, Springer
Spaniels, and Dachshunds.
- Dogs
are not self cleaners and have more dander than cats.
- Hairless
dogs produce less dander.
