Working
dogs like guide dogs form a unique relationship with
their handlers.
Guide
dogs serve an important role in the independence they
create for their blind handlers. While these pooches
are on duty 24 hours each day they are working dogs
and they love to do what they are trained and bred to
do.
Working
dogs that serve as guide dogs are usually Labradors,
Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds because the
traits these breeds possess such as intelligence, strength,
good health, stamina, and initiative make them effective
service dogs.
Often
guide dogs begin training as early as 6 weeks. After
the first year with a puppy walker, the young dog is
taken back to the training center and by age two, if
the canine meets specific qualifications, is able to
begin work and life with its new owner. These working
dogs generally work for about eight years and then retire.
