Dog
Allergies cause your dog discomfort.
There
are plenty of allergens that can cause dog
allergies. Some dogs are allergic to airborne allergens
such as grass or tree pollen. These are called inhalant
allergies.
Often
seasonal allergens can simalarly affect both you and
your pet. The difference is that inhalant allergens
like grass pollen in spring and summer, and ragweed
pollen in late summer early fall cause different symptoms.
With allergies in dogs, your dog's skin will become
very itchy and his hair can fall out where as you will
likely have a sinus infection.
Another
cause of allergic reactions in dogs can come from flea
saliva. If your pooch is madly scratching away, especially
on his underside or biting himself raw it may be a reaction
to flea saliva. To combat this you may want to try adding
Brewer's yeast and garlic to his food. Or add lavender,
rosemary sprigs or cedar chips to his bed area to help
keep fleas away.
A
dog allergy can also be caused by ingredients found
in commercial dog foods. Consult your veterinarian for
dietary advice. When your dog is allergic to something
in his diet it can lead to stomach and intestinal problems.
Here
are a few things to try to relieve your pet's allergies:
- Omega
3 and Omega 6 supplements to keep his skin supple
and healthy. Many dog food companies add these fatty
acids to their premium dog foods.
- Antihistamines
like Benedryl. Be sure to consult your vet for proper
dosage.
- Soak
your pooch in a cool bath with shampoo containing
aloe vera, oatmeal and eucalyptus, to cool and calm
his skin.
